Frequently Asked Questions:
What level should I be to participate?
Un P'tit Café is open to all levels but is especially well suited for speakers who feel they are intermediate or advanced beginners. It is recommended that you know how to speak in simple, straight-forward questions and are comfortable answering basic questions. I'll adjust the discussion according to the approximate levels of the participants. Of course, even if you are a beginner, these meetings are a fantastic opportunity to flex your listening and speaking muscles!
I signed up, but something's come up. Is there an attendance policy?
Attendance is flexible, but as a courtesy to the group, we’d appreciate at least 12 hours’ notice if you can’t make it.
I'd like to attend but feel nervous about participating. Can I just observe?
That’s perfectly okay! Speaking is not considered the most daunting of language-learning skills for nothing! My goal is to create a safe, welcoming space for students and French-lovers to practice. If you’re nervous, you’re still encouraged to join—many people feel the same way at first. The friendly atmosphere often helps ease those nerves, and I may gently send a question your way so you feel included without pressure.
Who are conversation groups for?
Just about anyone! Do you see yourself in one of the following:
-
You studied French in school are want an opportunity to practice
-
You are currently studying French and want more opportunities to speak.
-
You are looking for a friendly, zero-stakes space to practice communicating in a foreign language.
-
You love French!
If you said yes to any of the above, then a conversation group is for you!
Is there a cost for attending?
Nope—Un P'tit Café Conversation Club is free!
Are grammar and vocabulary covered in these meetings?
Grammar and vocabulary aren’t formally taught in these meetings. Before each session, I send a PDF with useful vocab, and I also add new words to the chat as we go. These meetings focus on conversation practice rather than structured lessons. If you’d like more guided grammar practice, I also offer Group and Private Classes.
What do you talk about during these meetings?
Each session tackles a different theme. We cover everything: gastronomy, fashion, tradition, architecture, travel, art... Then, I'll send participants some helpful resources focusing on the relevant vocabulary, and I prepare a series of questions, games, and activities to engage thoroughly with the theme.
